Ingredients

Scale

For the Pretzel Dough:

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup baking soda (for boiling)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

For the Cheese Filling:

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)

For Topping:

  • Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough:
    1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, until the mixture becomes frothy.
    2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add melted butter and yeast mixture, stirring until the dough comes together.
    3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
    4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Prepare the Cheese Filling:
    1. In a medium bowl, mix together shredded mozzarella, cream cheese, Parmesan, garlic powder, black pepper, and parsley until smooth.
  • Shape the Pretzels:
    1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal portions.
    3. Roll each portion into a rope about 12 inches long.
    4. Flatten each rope slightly, then place a generous spoonful of cheese filling in the center.
    5. Carefully fold the dough around the cheese, sealing the ends tightly, and shape the filled dough into a pretzel or knot shape.
    6. Repeat with the remaining dough and cheese filling.
  • Boil the Pretzels:
    1. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda.
    2. Carefully lower each stuffed pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake the Pretzels:
    1. Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg for a golden, shiny crust.
    2. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
    3. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Serve: Let the pretzels cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce, like marinara or ranch.

Notes

  • For a twist, try adding different cheeses like cheddar, Gouda, or a blend of your favorites to the filling.
  • If you don’t want to boil the pretzels, you can skip this step, but boiling helps achieve the classic pretzel texture.
  • You can freeze the stuffed pretzels before boiling; just freeze them on a baking sheet, then transfer to a zip-top bag for storage. Boil and bake from frozen when ready to eat.
  • These pretzels are best served fresh but can be reheated in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-10 minutes.
