Classic Tiramisu

Classic Tiramisu is a rich, creamy, and indulgent Italian dessert made with layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers, mascarpone cheese, and a dusting of cocoa powder. With its perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness, it’s a crowd-pleaser for any special occasion or as a delicious after-dinner treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • 1/4 cup coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 1 package (7 oz) ladyfingers (savoiardi)
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup mascarpone cheese, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting
  • Dark chocolate shavings or cocoa nibs (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Coffee Mixture:
    • In a shallow dish, combine the brewed coffee and coffee liqueur (if using). Set aside to cool.
  • Whisk the Egg Yolks and Sugar:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and granulated sugar until the mixture becomes pale and thick, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the Mascarpone:
    • Add the softened mascarpone cheese to the egg mixture and whisk until smooth and well combined.
  • Whip the Cream:
    • In a separate bowl, beat the heavy cream and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  • Fold the Cream into the Mascarpone Mixture:
    • Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture, being careful not to deflate the whipped cream. Set aside.
  • Assemble the Tiramisu:
    • Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, making sure not to soak them too long (they should be moist but not soggy).
    • Arrange a layer of dipped ladyfingers in the bottom of a 9×9-inch or similar-sized dish.
    • Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers.
  • Add a Second Layer:
    • Add another layer of dipped ladyfingers, followed by the remaining mascarpone mixture on top.
  • Chill the Tiramisu:
    • Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Serve:
    • Before serving, dust the top with a generous layer of unsweetened cocoa powder and garnish with dark chocolate shavings or cocoa nibs, if desired.

Notes

  • If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the coffee liqueur.
  • For an even richer flavor, try using espresso instead of regular brewed coffee.
  • You can prepare the tiramisu a day ahead for the best results, as it allows the flavors to develop.
