Delicious Banana Foster Recipe for Dessert Lovers

Banana Foster is a decadent dessert originating from New Orleans, combining buttery caramelized bananas with a touch of rum and banana liqueur, flambéed to create a dramatic effect. Served over vanilla ice cream, this sweet treat is simple to make and impressively delicious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium bananas, peeled and sliced lengthwise
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup banana liqueur (optional)
  • 1/4 cup dark rum
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  • Prepare the Sauce:
    • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. Add the brown sugar and stir until fully dissolved, forming a rich caramel sauce.
  • Caramelize the Bananas:
    • Place the sliced bananas in the skillet. Sprinkle with cinnamon and cook for 1–2 minutes per side, allowing them to soften and caramelize.
  • Flambé the Bananas:
    • Pour in the banana liqueur (if using) and dark rum. Allow the alcohol to warm for a few seconds, then carefully ignite it with a long match or lighter.
    • Gently shake the pan until the flames burn out, ensuring the alcohol cooks off while leaving the flavor intact.
  • Finish the Dish:
    • Stir in the vanilla extract, ensuring the bananas are coated evenly in the caramel-rum sauce.
  • Serve:
    • Serve immediately by spooning the bananas and sauce over scoops of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Substitutions: If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, substitute the rum and banana liqueur with orange juice or water.
  • Banana Tip: Use ripe, slightly firm bananas to maintain texture during cooking.
  • Add-ons: Top with whipped cream, chopped nuts, or a drizzle of chocolate syrup for extra indulgence.
