Black Pepper Chicken is a savory, flavorful dish with a perfect balance of spicy, aromatic black pepper and tender chicken. This easy-to-make recipe is perfect for a weeknight dinner or a special meal. Served with rice or vegetables, it’s an ideal option for those craving bold flavors with minimal effort. The peppery kick from the seasoning and the sweet undertone of the sauce make this dish irresistible!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb chicken breasts or thighs, boneless and skinless
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (or vegetable oil)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper (or more to taste)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, freshly grated (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil (optional)
  • 1/2 cup green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Prepare the chicken: If using chicken breasts, slice them into bite-sized pieces or thin strips. This will help the marinade soak in more evenly and allow for quicker cooking.
  • Make the marinade: In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, honey, ground black pepper, minced garlic, ginger, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Whisk until the honey dissolves and the mixture is smooth.
  • Marinate the chicken: Add the chicken to the marinade, ensuring it’s well-coated. Cover the bowl and let it marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes (or up to 2 hours for more flavor).
  • Cook the chicken: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the marinated chicken and cook for 6-8 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked through and golden brown on the edges.
  • Add extra black pepper: While the chicken is cooking, add more ground black pepper (to taste) for an extra kick. Stir well to coat the chicken evenly.
  • Serve: Once the chicken is cooked and glazed with the sauce, transfer it to a serving plate. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds for added flavor and crunch.
  • Enjoy: Serve your Black Pepper Chicken with steamed rice or sautéed vegetables for a complete meal!

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add crushed red pepper flakes or a splash of chili sauce to the marinade.
  • This dish can be made with chicken thighs for a juicier option, or even with shrimp or tofu for a variation.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can reduce the marinade in the pan for an extra few minutes after cooking the chicken.
  • If you don’t have sesame oil, you can omit it or replace it with a bit more olive oil or vegetable oil.
