Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef Marinade:

  • 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

For the Stir-fry:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions

1️⃣ Marinate the beef: In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, and ground cumin. Mix well to coat and let marinate for 15 minutes.

2️⃣ Prepare the stir-fry base: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 2–3 minutes until slightly softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Remove and set aside.

3️⃣ Cook the beef: Add the remaining vegetable oil to the skillet and increase the heat to high. Stir-fry the marinated beef in a single layer for 2–3 minutes until browned and cooked through.

4️⃣ Combine and season: Return the cooked onions and garlic to the skillet with the beef. Sprinkle in the ground cumin and chili flakes (if using). Stir in the soy sauce, oyster sauce, and rice vinegar. Toss everything together until well-coated and heated through.

5️⃣ Garnish and serve: Remove from heat and garnish with sliced green onions. Serve this flavorful Onion and Cumin Beef Stir-fry hot over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of dark soy sauce for richer color.
  • Swap beef with chicken or tofu for a different protein option.
  • Adjust the amount of chili flakes to suit your spice preference.
