Ingredients

Scale

For the Cupcakes:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup milk

For the Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 34 cups powdered sugar (adjust for consistency)
  • 23 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Green food coloring
  • Red and gold candy decorations (for ornaments)
  • Mini star-shaped candies (for the tree top)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  • Make the cupcake batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Combine the dry and wet ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  • Fill cupcake liners: Spoon the batter evenly into the cupcake liners, filling each about ⅔ full. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool the cupcakes: Let the cupcakes cool in the tin for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Prepare the frosting: While the cupcakes are cooling, make the buttercream frosting. Beat the softened butter until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time. Add the heavy cream or milk until you reach a smooth, spreadable consistency. Stir in vanilla extract and green food coloring until the desired shade of green is achieved.
  • Frost the cupcakes: Once the cupcakes are fully cooled, use a piping bag fitted with a star tip to pipe the green frosting in a swirl, creating the shape of a Christmas tree.
  • Decorate the trees: Decorate the tree-shaped frosting with red and gold candy ornaments and top each tree with a mini star-shaped candy to complete the look.
  • Serve and enjoy: Allow the frosting to set for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your festive, fun Christmas Tree Cupcakes!

Notes

  • For a more moist cupcake, consider adding a tablespoon of sour cream or yogurt to the batter.
  • You can make the cupcakes and frosting a day ahead. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • If you don’t have a star-shaped piping tip, you can use a round tip to make a simple swirl and still create a cute tree effect.
