Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package phyllo dough (about 16 oz), thawed
  • 2 cups walnuts, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup maple syrup (preferably pure)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, combine the chopped walnuts and ground cinnamon. Set aside.
  • Prepare the syrup: In a small saucepan, combine the maple syrup, granulated sugar, water, vanilla extract, lemon juice, and salt. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Let it cook for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
  • Layer the phyllo dough: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish with melted butter. Lay the first sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush it lightly with more butter. Continue layering and buttering the dough, one sheet at a time, until you have about 8-10 layers.
  • Add the walnut mixture: Once the layers are prepared, sprinkle a thin, even layer of the walnut-cinnamon mixture over the phyllo dough.
  • Continue layering: Add 4-5 more layers of phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with melted butter. Follow with another layer of the walnut mixture. Repeat this process until all the walnuts are used up, finishing with a final layer of phyllo dough (about 8-10 more layers).
  • Cut the baklava: Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  • Bake: Bake the baklava in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  • Pour the syrup: Once the baklava is baked, immediately pour the cooled maple syrup over the hot baklava. Make sure the syrup is evenly distributed and soaks into all the layers.
  • Cool and serve: Let the baklava cool completely before serving, allowing the syrup to set and the layers to firm up. Serve at room temperature and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a more intense maple flavor, you can substitute the maple syrup with a maple-flavored liqueur in the syrup mixture.
  • If you’re short on time, you can prepare the syrup ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to assemble and bake the baklava.
  • If you’d like to experiment, try mixing in other nuts such as pistachios or almonds for added flavor and texture.
  • Baklava can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
